General HSC Tips

The HSC is a strenuous time for most people. We here at Craville Studies have compiled a list of tips to help you through the HSC. They are divided into categories. Please discuss this info with your career's advisor at school before making any decisions.

Before Year 12

Before you start year 12 (or even year 11 for that matter), you should carefully consider what university course, TAFE course or apprenticeship you wish to get into. Many post-year 12 opportunities have prerequisites that you must satisfy in order to be accepted. Find out what these are and make sure you meet the entry requirements.

Also, take a look at what the UAI cut off for your uni course is. Decide whether it is realistic, too high or too low.

When picking subjects, also consider your ability level. If you are capable of doing an extension subject, then you should generally do it. Not only do most extension subjects have good adjusting and UAI scaling, they also generally have more students in the top bands. Don't take an easy way out.

If you are unsure what you want to do after school, make sure you leave your options open. Don't miss out on a UAI or pick easy subjects just because you don't know what you're going into. Pick subjects that are going to get you the best UAI possible, giving you more options at the end.

In regards to your study, use the school certificate and year 11 to work out what study methods work for you. Try as many approaches as possible, including audio tapes, written notes, typed notes, visuals, reading, memory puzzles, etc. That way, by the time year 12 starts, you will have worked out what works best for you.

During Year 12

Once year 12 is underway, don't waste time at the beginning. Start summaries straight away, it saves heaps of stress at the end.

Also, don't overburden yourself with other commitments. Having a part-time job or playing sport is fine. In fact, in most cases it can help as it gives you a break from school, but make sure your life is balanced.

During the HSC

First thing, don't stress. The HSC is not the end of the world. Do your best, but stressing won't help. Take time out after exams or during study to do something you enjoy.

Don't overdo study. If you've worked hard all year, then you are going to be well prepared. Don't study to a point where your brain is jelly. Study until you have lost concentration and are no longer absorbing information. After that point, nothing will stick anyway.

Try and get the same amount of rest that you would normally. If you usually go to bed at 9:30 on a school night, do the same during the exams. Otherwise, you will be disrupting what your body is used to.

Most of all, do your best, but don't stress. The HSC is not as hard as it seems if you just take time out to relax. Good Luck!
